Independent Living Skills Training (ILST) is a service intended to improve the ability of someone with a cognitive/physical disability to remain independent in the community. ILST is provided in the home or in various locations in the community. For example, if a waiver participant is struggling with interactions at the bank, an ILST provider would be able to assist him/her in the very setting where assistance is needed. ILST is geared towards the practical, everyday aspects of living independently that many individuals struggle with. ILST can assist with: home maintenance, accessing the community, money management/budgeting, memory strategies, time management, cooking, meal planning, appointments/scheduling, task completion and follow-through, and various other problem solving skills. Each ILST participant will be assessed to determine how he/she might benefit from services and what specific goals would be most effective and helpful. Each participant has his/her own goal plan due to the individualized nature of this service. There is no “one size fits all” approach with ILST. This service is available to anyone on the NHTD/TBI waiver who has a genuine desire to maintain as much independence as possible while living in the community.
